I’m OK with Gordon Ramsay. What about you?

Posted by spillay on May 2, 2008

Gordon Ramsay is almost a controversial phenomena these days. Ask anyone who’s chanced upon this man, and watch their expression immediately change to either unmistakable detest or pure awe, depending on how they have associated him in their minds. It is a wonder how anyone can impart an impression so quickly on people - “One show is enough!“, you hear people say.  Enough to either have them jump onto the Ramsay bandwagon or to move away as far (and fast) as possible from seemingly the Devil himself.

So, what is it about Gordon Ramsay that “divides the population” this way?  Is the reason as simple as his frequent use of coarse language?  I am keen to know.

At the risk of losing some friends, I hereby now come clean on how I feel about Gordon Ramsay.  I like him.    Watching Kitchen Nightmares, I am amazed at how quickly Gordon can identify “the egos” in people and attack them (the egos) point blank!  Secretly, I wished I had the skill to see through people the way Gordon can.  I wish I too, could carve up the different layers of deception that we mortals load onto ourselves and see it as it is.  The way I see it, Gordon doesn’t hurt a soul

As for his frequent us of expletives, it did take some getting used to.

Now, in regards to Gordon’s other TV program, Hell’s Kitchen (which premiered in Australia this week) - I have to honestly say that I am not too keen on it.  I’m almost afraid to think that Gordon himself may be falling into the “Ego Trap” with this one!  What do you think?

Personally, I love Gordon Ramsay. In really stopping to think about why, I’ve come to the conclusion that it is because he cares so much about what he does. Despite his legendary temper and all the cursing, I get the impression that his rage isn’t provoked by people who are not perfect, but by people that don’t really care about what they’re doing.

If I’m going to pay big money to have someone else feed me, I would certainly want that person to have the same passion for food as Gordon Ramsay.

P.S. I also have a great big fan-crush on him, but I expect that’s mostly because of all that passion and not just his craggy good looks.

I admire people like him. I am so NOT this way that I’m kind of in “awe” of people that can be. I just did a post recently about tempers on my blog and got some different opinions about them. To feel this passionately about something, I think is great. Simon Cowell is another one. He just says it how it is and wouldn’t we really rather know the truth? I would much rather know whether I was good at something or not. Why waste the time if you just don’t have the talent to do something? I will say however, I wouldn’t want to be told that to in front of the world. My tender little feelings couldn’t handle it in that matter.

hmm.. not quite sure who Gordon Ramsay is… we don’t have him here in Malaysia.. or even if he was on tv here, we wouldn’t know cos we don’t have tv at home.. but regardless of that, he sounds like a wysiwyg kind of guy. I am actually undecided about whether its better to be “wysiwyg” or to be “say nothing if you have nothing nice to say”. Does it depend on the situation? Or should you always be the same towards everyone and for every occassion.. what do you think, spillay?

@ Jimsmuse: Thanks for dropping by :) . I agree - his passion is simply so powerful! And after seeing some of the kitchens on the show,.. I can’t help but feel a little apprehensive when I go out to eat these days :)

@ Joy: I’m glad I still have some friends… :) . Honest opinions are really what matters,..and those people who get “addressed” by Mr Ramsay on Kitchen Nightmares have a good thing happening to them…(and most of them don’t even know it!!). :)

@ Dinesh: As long as you live in Malaysia, you won’t see Gordon on TV. The Censorship Board will have too much work to do! (Actually,… if they were to get through his show - there wouldn’t even be 1 minute of it left in it..so it is better they don’t bother anyway). You are right about him being a “WYSIWYG” kind of guy. And the best thing about him is that he really attacks the “egos” of people. No dancing and prancing around anybody’s feelings. But if they are true and keen,.. he recognises this and gives them all the credit they deserve. I love it! Fair and Square! :)

Just his facial expressions scare me.

  6. kat Says:

Errr.. not too long ago I had a *censored* dream about him…. :D

He is not as tough and mean as he appears on Hell’s Kitchen. I could see the gentler, more passionate side of him in some of his other shows. And from his book, I can see that he is a regular bloke who worked really hard to get to where he is now. He’s not afraid to recognise and accept failure and he values his staff and gives credit when credit is due. A good boss and mentor to have!

  7. spillay Says:

@ Nicole3: Ha! Ha! Yes - he can be very, very scary if wanted to…

@ Kat: A *censored* dream?? I’m afraid to ask….. ;) . The first episode of Hell’s Kitchen was showed last week here in OZ(Finally!). I actually prefer Kitchen Nightmares, only because the people that face the wrath of Ramsay are ALREADY in the food business and should not be making the mistakes that they are making. Shocking! BTW, which book of his did you read? Might check it out too… And, I definitely agree with you re having a boss/mentor like him! :)

  8. Shy Says:

I like his Kitchen Nightmares..pretty amazed, how he can turn around things so quickly, just by addressing people issues..not much of a fan for his use of expletives. I did n’t like hell’s kitchen as much.

last weekend he was in toronto..he has show called ‘F word’ premiering in fall in Foodtv canada.

apparently only food he doesn’t like to eat or to cook with is ‘okra’.ladies finger…he has size 15 shoes.haha

@ Shy: I’m with you - I prefer Kitchen Nightmares and it is amazing how he works! It seems, at the end of the day,.. the success or failure of a business comes down to people issues (as you said). You seem to know some personal details about him….hmm… how are you getting the inside scoop?

  10. Shy Says:

how are you getting the inside scoop?
    ..you asked

    …not through ‘censored dream’keep guessing :)
enjoy veggie week..you are doing great..man! you are a great cook!

  11. sengdroma Says:

I totally dig Gordon he makes me laugh and cry each time I watch him. I admire your veggie week, I personally am a meer mortal and cannot resist meat.

  12. spillay Says:

@ Shy: Ha! HA! I don’t think we can all have a ‘censored dream’ like what Kat had! And… I really cannot imagine how else you would know what size shoes Mr Ramsay wears…As for me being a great cook…. that would be the day!! :)

@ Sengdroma: Thanks for dropping by :) . He is a unique character isn’t he! We have Gordon Ramsay on TV 3 nights a week here!! 8:30pm. :)

  13. UL Says:

i am with you and Shy here, i like him too…size 15 huh ? ;)

  14. Trupti Says:

I adore him! He’s been one of my favs, ever since I laid my eyes on him. ;)

cool blog you have here..will be back!

  15. spillay Says:

@ UL: Are you thinking what I am thinking? Mr Ramsay’s has big feet!!

@ Trupti: Thanks for dropping by :). I’ve dropped by your site and love it too! Re Gordon Ramsay - it looks like he’s taken over television worldwide! I’m just wondering what Jamie Oliver is doing right now???
